Bracket Fairness & Randomization

When you run 8-person brackets, Tournament Doctor uses a sophisticated randomization algorithm to ensure fair matchups across all bracket instances.

How It Works

When you click Run Brackets, the system performs up to 50,000 shuffle iterations. Each iteration randomizes the bracket positions and checks for duplicate first-round matchups. The algorithm picks the shuffle that produces the most unique matchups across all brackets.

Anti-Repeat Matchup Prevention

The algorithm tracks every first-round pairing across all bracket instances. If Bowler A and Bowler B already faced each other in Bracket 1, the system tries to avoid pairing them again in Bracket 2, 3, etc. This ensures variety across brackets.

Viewing the Randomization Report

After brackets are run, open the Bracket Randomization Report from the Actions dropdown. This report shows:

  • Matchup Frequency Matrix: A grid showing how many times each pair of bowlers faced each other across all brackets.
  • Distribution Analysis: Statistics proving that matchups are spread evenly rather than concentrated on a few pairings.
  • Shuffle Attempts: How many iterations were needed to achieve optimal distribution.

Pro Tip

Show the Randomization Report to bowlers who question fairness. The visual proof of even distribution builds trust in your tournament's integrity.
